On the "set your own speed limit", I cannot completely explain this but I discovered that there is always a speed at which I feel safe and in control. That varies with where I am driving, weather conditions, familiarity of roads, etc. Something that I think about when tempted to drive over the speed limit is that should I have a wreck, I could be found at fault if going over speed limit whether or not I am actually at fault.
I realize that certain friend do not like to ride with me because I do not pull out in front of cars. I rather be safe than sorry. I remind myself that I am not in THAT big of a hurry!

I am not a parent, so let me say what you couldn't: the advice isn't good. The majority of accidents happen because the drivers are speeding and aren't paying attention to what's around them. The speed limits aren't placed for no reason.
From Driverthink:
Interesting comment ~ and you're not wrong. The points that we're trying to make here is that Race Car Drivers speed, but do pay attention. The idea is to take the skills and attention of a race car driver and apply them to the highway while remaining fully aware that the highway is in no way, a Racetrack ~ nor are its drivers other Race Car Drivers!

Something that's a little bit similar is when folks are coming up to take a left turn at an intersection. Some people tend to stay in line until the turn lane officially opens up (that is, until the "suicide lane" narrows to the stripes and the turn lane happens), while some folks just fly down the suicide lane. If I ever go down the suicide lane in those situations I always make sure I'm going no more than 15 or so MPH in case anyone wants to cut in front of me and doesn't look.

The biggest killer on our roads is the Cruise Control. Think about it, the cruise control does not know if the driver is sleepy, or asleep, when the roads are slippery, or the driver is inexperienced. Careering along at a "fixed throttle" has got to be a set and forget danger. How many more vehicles are running in to other vehicles on the other side of the road, or running off the road? Take mind of this as reality does'nt lie.
There is no media talk of all of this, as the multi-national car companies would be held LIABLE. Think about it?
Once there were hand throttles in vehicles, but they were banned because of the dangers.

Hi! Loved this article. I would dispute a couple of things you said, though--first would be that it's better to have a side impact. I would argue that since there is a huge crumple zone in the front (the entire hood), and basically no crumple zone on the side, it is safer to be hit in the front than on the side (assuming equal speed). I think this is why you often see better frontal impact crash ratings than side crash ratings on the same car. Also, the reason why they do offset frontal crash tests is because offset is where you get the maximum force with minimal force distribution (since it's just on that side of the car)--if you were to hit someone head-on with your hoods exactly lined up, the crash would be easier on you. I definitely agree that swerving is the thing to do though!
Second, I personally wouldn't practice swerving too much on a road... Maybe in an empty parking lot or something. Never know when a cop is gonna be there! (Or when you're going to do it wrong and end up on your side on the side of the road.)
This is my first time visiting your blog, and I thought this was a great post. I think it's important for people to be able to read about driving safety in a concise and entertaining format.
From Driverthink:
Very interesting and valid comments. I will post it in the showcased comments.
On the side impact; yes, you are absolutely correct. When I wrote the article I was thinking more if you could take the side impact on the rear of the car or the axel. Also, in the side impact, while the side of the car might not take it as well, the entire car would also be able to skid sideways, absorbing force, as opposed to a frontal where "nuttin's gonna give!" Never the less, your point is very well taken.
Yes, anytime you practice anything in a car it behooves you to do it in a safe place - preferably with no "bears" watching the action!

I have to laugh. After reading this I realized how many drivers out there are driving like with a race-car driver mentality. There is a very aware, proactive aspect to driving like this. It's better than the disengaged, talking-on-cell phone and nodding off type of driving, but it is just not practical for the mix of drivers on today's roads. One of the best things I learned from my dad was the concept of Defensive Driving, which employs active, confident, yet cool and safe driving.
From Driverthink:
Very well put. If we could take the focus and skill of a race car driver and apply it to defensive but confident driving we'd probably all be a lot safer. There's a middle road and that's what I tried to suggest in this article - but you summarized it very well. Thanks! Reply to this

However, I agree that it does remove a slight bit of concentration from the road. But no more than the radio of your car when you're singing along with a song or just simply listening to it or changing the station. Doesn't require any more attention than it does to turn on my air conditioner or roll down the window. Or even attempting to get a cup out of a cup holder to get a drink probably requires more concentration than replying to a text.
from Driverthink:
Driverthink never suggests that we judge others by our own limitations - so if you feel you can text safely while driving, so be it. You are definately correct about the concentration issue - and that's the real issue. As with cell phones it's not about the actual call, but rather the nature of the conversation and the driving conditions you are in. It is all about eyes on the road and concentration.
If your texting doesn't require more attention than drinking a cup of coffee or tuning the radio, I commend you. You must be one in a million!
Just don't hurt anyone other than yourself or an indiscretion could quickly become a felony.

I'm not kidding when I suggest that you find a police officer to teach you. That way, if anything should ever happen (like you get pulled over) you can say "officer so-and-so told me X." However, this only works if you were not caught being egregiously illegal and unsafe.
If you don't know any officers, do what the rest of us did: boring driver's education. The AAA course was marginally effective for me but it may teach you a few things you didn't know. The benefit is, if nothing else, you'll get a break on your insurance for completing the course.

My brother hit a car at an intersection. He was traveling south (with green light) and the other person traveling north ,made a left turn, but my brother hit that persons car on the passenger door. Who's at fault? That other person should of yield, correct? Now , my brothers truck has front damage, looks like engine might have been pushed back. Another issue, his truck airbag did not deploy, shouldn't it had deployed? Thanks in advance for the advice. Reply to this
Driverthink is not an attorney but usually, all things being equal, Green light etc, the person travelling straight would have right of way over someone turning in front of him. This of course makes little difference if that someone chooses to risk life and limb by making said turn.
As for the air bag, it might depend on the angle of contact.
Your brother might want to request that his insurance company "Subrogate" this claim. What this would do is hold the other driver 100% liable for the accident (assuming the facts justify it) and thereby recover any deductable he might have to pay for the repairs. Also, if subrogated, the record would show he had no fault in the accident.

Distracted drivers fall into more categorizes, there are buss drivers that are responsible for keeping more lives safe, there are trunk drivers that are supposed to keep merchandise safe, there are car rental drivers that are supposed to keep the cars safe and there are small cars drivers that are supposed to keep their lives save. Each of these categories of drivers has a strong motivation to drive safely but still accidents happen, I don't think we can control that, we can lower the car accident rates but we cannot eliminate them. These are all great points and points that every driver should take into account. One thing about driving safely is that you always need to be alert and paying attention. It's generic, but it's the truth.
In the smallest amount of time some idiot can misjudge and pull into your lane, try to make a left turn when they clearly shouldn't, and so on. I honestly think that there would be far less accidents if everyone drove manual. Sure, it becomes second nature after a while, but I still find a huge difference in my alertness when I happen to drive automatic for whatever reason. Anyhow, great article. Reply to this

Haha! Great to realize - completely agreed. You mention all the simple things, like gas mileage, windshield wipers and suspension ... but there are also a helluva lot more things that make driving almost an autopilot activity nowadays. Anti-lock braking systems, traction control, automatic climate control, seats that are programmed to remember different positions and cruise control all make the job of driving (as well as the mechanic's job of fixing the things!) a lot more complex. It doesn't take away from the fact that as you age, your senses and reaction time starts to decline though. Respect, but also caution. Reply to this

This post offers very good advice to drivers who don’t want to be part of a rear end collision. Car insurance rates go up after accidents like that, but it is nothing compared to the emotional trauma and the hassle of getting the car claim sorted. The point by point tips you offer here are concrete bits of advice that drivers can take to heart to ensure that they are not accidental victims. It’s a pity that more of the aggressive drivers on the road who are raising car insurance rates for everyone aren’t more mindful of these thoughtful rules for good, safe driving! Reply to this

This article made me feel good. I have always striven to be a smooth driver to the point that it has become unconscious for me. This is partly due to the fact that I get car sick easily and need a smooth ride. I really don't think too much about it now except when I ride with other drivers and wonder if they realize how much they are jerking their passengers around braking quickly, using jerking motions that are totally unnecessary. I can feel every jerk!
Awareness and anticipation are certainly important factors. Another point, smooth driving means less wear and tear on the brakes. My husband has commented many times that I am really easy on brakes. It is likely that gas mileage is better with smooth driving as well.

It is true that many of us feel that we are driving on the edge, however, it may not all be a bad thing. The truth is, fatalities have declined from 50,000 in the early 1970s to 43,000 today with far more cars on the road. Injuries are down as well.
I wish that we had more highway miles here to counteract the number of cars on the road. The Interstate highway system needs to be doubled in size.
I like faster driving and don't mind the NASCAR effect on urban freeways. I can't stand slow driving on otherwise clear roads. In a slow driving environment, I feel like a fish out of water. Reply to this

Good rules. I am sending this to my kids/grandkids. Doug said just last night that Westley recently got his permit and they were reading through your book. I gave each family one last year for Christmas.

Thanks for the great comment.

I've thought about this before and I really appreciate you bringing it up!
From Driverthink:
Yup ~ you're right! Great point.

This slogan is very interesting because it's written with the right words, but I guess everybody felt that their relation with the car has somehow changed. It happened to me before, to infer something, an idea, and to have a shock when I heard it put into words.

From Driverthink:
Hey Bob, how're you doing?
Couldn't agree more. Driverthink has never been a big fan of Cruise Control ~ especially in Rain (see http://driverthink.com/2010/06/30/driving-in-the-rain-and-slippery-weather.aspx
Thanks as always for the comment.

All in all, thanks for the comments!

One tip I learned by accident in Driver’s Ed was that if there is space in front of you and you see a collision coming from behind DON’T stamp on your brakes in a panic. Of course you don’t want to be sent coasting into cross traffic or into the guy in front of you, but if you are in ‘neutral’ when hit from behind the damage will be much much less.

Interesting - but if I have space in front of me I would be trying to use it to get out of the way if possible.

On the international front the optical flash has a totally different meaning in Thailand. Over there it is used mainly on two lane roads to signal to oncoming traffic that a car is heading directly at them as it passes another car. In other words I’m in your lane so you’d better look out!

I took Defensive driving once after getting a speeding ticket... we met at an all you can eat restaurant and I feel as if it was kinda a waste of time.
Now I bike everywhere (by choice) and I feel like that has made me the most defensive and aware person on the road! I notice everything I am TRULY protecting my life by being defensive.
I think that motorcyclist, bikers, and people who ride scooters have to retrain themselves to be aware and reactive to any situation to save their life... making very good drivers!

Thanks!

When first learning to drive, I think everyone should go out to an empty parking lot, after a fresh snow and do a ton of doughnuts. I didn't do this at first and I almost got into an accident the first time it snowed after I got my license. Luckily, my dad did exactly as you suggested and I learned A LOT about how my car handled the snowy roads. I completely agree that people should learn more about their cars and how they handle under different conditions.

Driving defensively and safely will drastically reduce the risk of being in an accident and more importantly in a serious or life threatening car crash. It is no secret that most auto accidents are due to driver not following safe driving tips. Safe defensive driving skills can easily be learned. Learning and following a few rules can help you avoid accidents and traffic fines and more importantly can save your life.

First launched in January 2007, the Youth Reckless Driving Prevention campaign targets teens and young adults between the ages of 15 and 21 and encourages them to speak up when they are in the car with friends who are driving recklessly and they don't feel safe. The campaign also seeks to increase awareness about the dangers of reckless driving and educate teens on how to be safe drivers by focusing on safe speeds, avoiding distractions, wearing seat belts, and the differences associated with driving SUVs.

Great article. It's the tailgaters that scare me. I have a manual shift, and my truck can roll backwards on a steep hill when starting from a stop - just a few inches, but sometimes I dont' have much more than that!
From Driverthink:
Yup. It's a definate problem. You might want to take along a few copies of my article, "The Stop on my Tail-gater" and pass them out to those puppies on your back bumper!

Don't be afraid of the road. You will learn to get comfortable behind the wheel and if you aren't comfortable, you aren't driving the right car for you.

Good things to look for while driving. I've been rear-ended before, and it was totally the other guy's fault. My break lights were working. There was nothing, nothing at all I could have done to avoid it. It just goes to show that sometimes, even when you're careful, things can happen.
Driverthink response: They sure can! We call it being "trapped" and it will be the subject of my next article!
Best (only) thing you can do is to try not to get "trapped".

Good luck.

There are family size cars on the market that are now much more economical as well as hybrid cars. As demand for more miles per gallon increase so will the auto industry shift their cars to match the demand. Its not just about the size of the engine any more, but how many miles that engine can give us.

So right! Cars were much more dangerous in some ways - faster, and much more dependent on driver control. There were a few crucial differences from today that made driving easier, though - teenagers would never have had the money to buy their own car back then, and there was only a tiny percentage of the cars that are now on the road ... sheer volume makes for a much more dangerous driving experience.

Interesting article about the dangerous problem of drowsiness at the wheel.I find that actually starting to do a running commentary on your drive, mentioning all that you are seeing and doing (either just in your head or even better spoken out loud )helps to get the brain cells active again and before long you should feel wide awake.
It has to be said that if that doesn`t work you really need to find somewhere to stop and take a rest.

Interesting comments. Yes. Not good to be multi-processing while driving. And you're certainly not alone believing that running through the gears and punching a cluch will keep you more alert! I often "pretend" I'm shifting - even in my automatics for just that reason.

Oh you are so right, so much about cars has changed. The more I think back the more i see how it is all so different in making cars and the engine and computer systems. Gone are the days of fixing a car on the side of the road by a process of elimination. Now it's computer down, the car is inactive no matter what, or call the roadside service to come help. Car insurance is so much more compliacted as well.Cars are designed to crumple, and with intuitive braking systems and all manner of things that we did without before. I can't help but love those old muscle cars still, but I am partial to power steering now.

I have been following your blog for a month or so and have picked up some good data as well as enjoyed the way you’ve got structured your site. I am trying to run my own weblog but I think its too normal and I want to focus more on smaller topics. Being all issues to all folks just isn’t all that its cracked as much as be.

That is an interesting observation. You know, it is really so. If to give it a thought I also agree with it. But you know vehicles stopped being a means of transport long ago. I like to read about famous people (find a lot of their autobiographies at the files search engine http://rapid4me.com ) and almost everybody agrees that they buy very expensive cars either because it has been their dream or because of their social position but not because the like high speed.

Rear end accidents will be aggravated if more communities and states adopt camera based enforcement. We need to make sure that we can slow down that momentum as well as be aware of our surroundings.

All the safe driving and safety rules are not just for the ones who are actually driving. They are for all who wants to servive. They are for the walfare of the people who left home in a hope that they would come back again home to play with their children, to take their wives to the shopping.

You certainly made your point, and you are also right, still, if you don't drive two cars at the same time, why would you want the second car?

Real driving was the driving in the 60's, it's true we didn't have the technology today but there some cars that I could never forget. The love of my life was Ford Lincoln, no other car will make me forget my firs car.

All this to say that I enjoyed this article.

I like the tips here. I have used them myself. I don't do it often enough, but looking through the car in front of you is a great idea that used to be taught in driver's ed.
